Jonathan Richards (principal of Haverford School, 1853-1857) served as an Indian agent for the Wichitas and affiliated bands at Wichita, Kansas from 1870-1876. Enoch Hoag, a member of Iowa Yearly Meeting, was appointed Superintendent of the Central Superintendency (Kansas and Indian Territory) in 1869 under President Grant's "Peace Policy." This gave supervision of the Indians in this area to the Orthodox branch of the Society of Friends.
